Robert S. Carr

Executive Director 

Bob Carr co-founded the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy in 1985. He has served as its full time director since 1999. He has worked as an archaeologist with the State of Florida's Division of Historic Resources and with the National Park Service. He was Miami-Dade County's first archaeologist and became the County's Historic Preservation Director in 1999. Bob has a Master's Degree in Anthropology from Florida State University. He is a former editor of the Florida Anthropologist and former president of the Florida Archaeological Council. He is a recipient of the Bullen Award, and received Florida's Historic Preservation Award in 2003.


John Beriault

West Coast Project Representative 

John graduated with a BA in History from the University of Miami in 1970. He has served as president of the Southwest Florida Archaeological Society, the Collier County Historical Society, the Naples Chapter of the Florida Plant Society, and the Florida Anthropological Society. John has received the William C. Lazarus Award from FAS, the Green Palmetto Award from the Florida Native Plant Society, and the Craighead Award from SWFAS. John resides in Naples and works as field archaeologist, cartographer, geobotanist, and historian on Florida west coast projects.


Ryan Franklin

PaleoArchaeologist / Collections Manager 

Ryan received his Ph.D. from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, in 2011. After earning his BA in anthropology from Florida Atlantic University, Ryan relocated to South Africa where he worked in the field of Palaeoanthropology for a number of years. He has received several grants from Paleo-Anthropological Scientific Trust, and is a recipient of Postgraduate Merit Award and Postgraduate Merit Scholarship from the University of the Witwatersrand. Ryan has returned to South Florida and has worked for AHC since 2006. His research interests include taphonomy and physical anthropology with a primary focus on palaeopathology.


Timothy A. Harrington

Architectural Historian / Exhibit Designer

Tim has a background in art, industrial and graphic design, and historical preservation. He was educated at St. John's College, Annapolis, MD, Ball State University, Muncie, IN, and Kyoto University of Fine Arts, Kyoto, Japan. Prior to joining AHC he worked as a VISTA with Main Street Fort Pierce and served as Historic Preservation Planner for the City of Fort Pierce, Florida. For his work in redevelopment, preservation, and education Tim was recognized by the Florida Main Street Program and the City of Fort Pierce, and has twice received awards from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation.

Native American history from the school

Today we received news from Madeline, a teacher regarding an interesting project to revamp their class website letting the students help out with adding some of the content. Claire is one of the students involved in this project, and she have been investigating about Native American history. As part of her research, our website shows up. We are glad to hear that our website has been useful for Claire, who shared the information with her class. She also found the graphic we share here about Native American dwellings. It is a pleasure to help, and maybe one day Claire and her class can visit us in one of our archaeological projects, and view in person the material evidences of the Native American history.

On This Land, The Charles Deering Estate to be featured at Coral Gables Art Cinema

By: Cathy Guerra | August 14, 2018 The Deering Estate Foundation’s award-winning film On This Land, The Charles Deering Estate will be featured during a Lunch and Learn event at the Coral Gables Art Cinema on Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Junior League of Miami, Coral Gables Museum and Deering Estate Foundation. A panel discussion will include historian Arva Moore Parks and archaeologist Bob Carr who appear in the film. On This Land, The Charles Deering Estate was written by author and preservationist Becky Roper Matkov and produced and directed by Carl Kesser of Kesser Post Production. Research involved trips to Chicago, Sarasota and Sitges, Spain and interviews with historians, archaeologists, a former Florida governor and descendants of Charles Deering.
